March 2010 PDF Print E-mail

Thankfully the weather has started to improve and I have managed to get out there and catch a few. My first fish of the year came from a small water in Waltham Abbey after a couple of overnighters with no action to report I managed to get back there in the middle of march just before it shut for the close season and bank my first twenty of the year, white chocolate wafters doing the trick.

I was intending to move on to Golden Gates for the rest of the month but with it completely switched off and nothing coming out since November I thought I would visit another one of my winter waters for a couple of weeks before my ticket ran out, this proved to be a very good move as after two overnighters I had managed to bank two of the three known 30's in the lake, both these coming out on the bloodworm.

The first of the 30's went 32.12lb a proper old warrior called slate grey and thought to be the biggest fish in the lake that was until a week later when I caught the new lake record at 34.00lbs another very old fish called V scar, both fish believed to be over 40 years old.

I grew up fishing this little water and remember catching them as doubles over 15 years ago, its a great little intimate water with both fish coming out from the margins only a couple of feet from the bank.

In between a few overnighters on my little club water I managed to get down Golden Gates for my first trip, I even managed to hook one on my first night down there but after a minute or so I pulled out of it, I was gutted as that would have been the first one out of there for the year and on my first trip down there would have been a massive result, but it was not to happen, well not on my first trip anyway.

Keep an eye out for Jon's latest update where he has caught the 3 biggest fish in the lake, all in only about 5 nights fishing!!!!

Winter Update.

I certainly haven't had the start to the year that I was hoping for, in-fact far from it, since Christmas due to work and the big freeze I have only managed two nights fishing and both of these were extremely uneventful that is apart from me breaking the ice up so I could retrieve my lines first thing in the morning.

I don't think I can ever remember a winter so cold, as I write this in the middle of February my two winter waters of choice are both frozen over, this has seemed to be the case on nearly all my rest days from work in the last couple of months. Even the Brentwood Show was cancelled due to the snow.

There was a one week slot a couple of weeks ago that I thought might give me the chance to get out, but even then it all went wrong and I was was struck down with swine flu, even now two weeks later I'm still struggling with it.

Aside from the big freeze and swine flu I have actually had some good news. With me not renewing my Ticket for the Essex water that I was on last year, I had been on the hunt for a few new venues. In January I had a letter from Cemex angling offering me a ticket for Horton church lake, after being on the waiting list for the last 5 years it was perfect timing for it to come up, also I have been lucky enough to get my hands on a Golden Gates ticket.

Now with my new lakes sorted for 2010 it looks as though I will be spending the spring down at golden gates in pursuit of one of those big commons, and then turn my attentions to Horton for the summer and Autumn.

So with the very little fishing opportunities I have had recently at least I have had the chance to get myself organized for when I do get out, I have managed to tie up plenty of rigs, re- spool my reels as well as having a general tidy up of my gear and even thin it down so I can try and be as mobile as possible.

As for this weekend I'm finally looking forward to getting down to one of the carp show which will be “ THE BIG ONE” at Farnborough.

Feel free to come over and visit the Sticky baits team, we will be pleased to help out with any questions or advise about the range of products we stock.

Hopefully my next update will bring some better news and maybe even some photos of a few captures!!As I have no new fish photos for my diary I'll leave one attached of one of my favourite winter captures of last year.

Keep with it and good luck.

My plans are to try and keep you updated with all that happens in my fishing throughout 2010. I will try to update things every month with catch reports (fingers crossed), tactics used and any little edges with baiting techniques etc. I haven't gone into details bait details in the blog as I am currently preparing some things for the bait tips features, keep your eye out if you're interested in seeing how I get the best out of Sticky's products.

Firstly I’ll give you a little review of my time so far with Sticky Baits, I joined the team at the end of August, and after having discussions with Steve Blow about the Sticky Bait products, I had some samples sent down to me, I decided to put my faith in the Bloodworm range of products.

I had planned to fish the rest of 2009 at an Essex syndicate water,  I had been concentrating on this lake on and off for the last couple of years, knowing that this would be my last year on the lake and with my ticket running out quickly I wasted no time in getting down there and introducing some bloodworm bait. Straight from the off on my first couple of nights I managed 3 fish up to 31.00lbs.

In the previous years I had fished the water, there had always been one large mirror that had always eluded me, this was until the beginning of September when I had the session of my life, in one 60 hour session I managed my target fish at a weight of 45.02lbs as well as the following fish 42.02lbs 40.02lbs 37.08lbs 36.04lbs 35.08lbs.  I even managed the front page of carp talk (which can be seen on the home page). As you can imagine I was gagging to get back down there and after a week at work I managed another couple of nights and had three more at 36.04lbs 35.00lbs and 26.00lbs. With a one week trip to France fast approaching I got one more night in and had two more at 30.00lbs and 25.00lbs, but that night will be more remembered for the wrong reasons as I lost the biggest common in the lake at the net after a twenty minute fight.

At the end of September I went over to Millstone lake, France for the week with my mate Edd, where lucky for me the fish continued to come, three fifties at 52.00lbs, 50.04lbs, 50.02lbs,and some excellent back up fish of 48.00lbs, 47.06lbs, 42.04lbs, 40.02lbs, 38.04lbs, 37.08lbs, 32.02lbs, 18.00lbs. It proved to be a great trip in very difficult conditions, with next to nothing coming out to anybody else on the lake except us. Millstone is a fantastic venue that I would thoroughly recommend to anyone and one that I will definitely be returning to myself.

So back from France and It was now October, my next trip was to my Essex syndicate accompanied with a guest, that being Sticky Baits own Steve Blow. On our arrival we were informed that the lake had been dead with nothing being out for the last three weeks, again in tough conditions we managed 5 fish between us with three falling to me at 30.02lbs 28.08lbs and a small common. I managed another four nights at the venue in October and continued to get amongst them with fish at 32.00lbs 32.04lbs and a couple of twenties.

We were then into November, Steve and I returned to the Essex water for another two night session. This is one session that Steve won’t ever forget, I won’t go into it as I’m sure Steve will talk about it in his Blog, all I will say is that he had one of the most sought after fish in the lake at 47.12lbs and graced the front page of carp talk, excellent angling mate!!. I managed a stunning mirror at 28.00lbs.

Going into December, I only got out for a couple of nights due to work commitments and Christmas approaching which both resulted in blanks.

Well that’s a very quick update on my time with sticky baits so far, with 3 x 50’s,7 x 40’s, 14 x 30’s and many 20's all gracing my net , I don’t think I could of asked for more than that in the last 4 months. All I can say is get on the bloodworm you won’t be disappointed!!

For 2010 I have a couple of new tickets and new challenges that I look forward to keeping you updated with!
